ELIZABETH VELS

Born 1937 in Pietermaritzburg

 

As Elizabeth says, “I am a compulsive maker and recorder. Much of my work is Book related, conceived as a page or word to form a series, layered and cryptic, combining craft and art practice: darning, weaving, book-making, paper layering, drawing, painting and etching.”

1956 – 58 Student nurse, Groote Schuur Hospital.
1960 – Natal Teachers Diploma, Natal Training College.
1971 – National Art Teachers Diploma, Johannesburg College of Art.
1972 – Lecturer Painting Dept. and Art History
1982 – Maureen Richardson / papermaking  workshop U.K.
1983 – Higher Diploma (papermaking/painting) Wits Technikon
1984 – Bookbinding Peter Carstens
1972 – 85 Lecturer, part time, Wits Tech
1989 – 93 Masters Diploma (Distinction) Dissertation ‘Logos as artifact’  Wits Technikon

1994 – Fulltime artist
1999 – Part time trainer, Khoibos Papermakers, Tsitsikamma. Self help project.
