Elmien's formal art career started in 1991 at the Johannesburg Art Foundation where she completed the foundation course in Fine Arts. In 1994 she completed the National Diploma in Fine Art at the prestigious Art School at Technicon Witwatersrand. She was awarded the Chemosol Prize for silk screen printing.
In 1999 her artwork was chosen to advertise the Gansbaai "Whale and Fynbos Festival" throughout the Overberg. Elmien's silk screen print titled 'Gansbaai" was used for the cover of the "Portfolio Bed & Breakfast Collection 2000". In 2013 her acrylic painting "Gansbaai" graced the cover of Splash magazine.
From 1995 to 2007 she focused on silk screen printing and developed the colourful naive style for which she is widely recognised. Her first solo exhibitions were held in 1997 at
the Lilliesleaf Gallery in Rosebank and the Cape Gallery in Cape Town.
The Bredasdorp Gallery, Mission House Gallery in Onrus, Chameleon Gallery in Kalkbay and the Cape Gallery are amongst the galleries that permanently display Elmien's delightful paintings, silk screen prints and glass art.
From 2007 to 2010 Elmien explored the exciting process of glass slumping and fusing. She created beautiful wall hangings, windows and decorative plates and bowls. From 2011 to 2014 she worked with acrylic m canvas as her main focus, returning to the rich colours and cheerful scenes adored by her followers.
In 2013, she returned to a childhood dream to produce clay-animations. She started a preduction company MienaMationClaymation and with a deliberately small budget dove headfirst into 'The Adventures of Biscuit'. It produced a series of short films depicting funny encounters between the quirky characters.
