ARTIST STATEMENT:

"When I started painting in 2006/7 my life was in turmoil and
expressing the trauma I was experiencing in my painting was a
release of the tension that had taken root in my mind and body.
But as I moved on, my attention turned to more peaceful images.
There is so much drama in real life, do we really want to be
confronted with it on our walls as well? I’m inuenced by the
place I live in, Boesmansriviermond/Kenton on Sea; seaside/river
villages and the tranquility this space provides my soul. I travel
quite a bit usually by road, so I have time to see, really see,
landscapes cloaked in different light and weather. My eyes catch
the horizons, the looming, rugged mountains of the Western
Cape, the silent space of the Karoo with unfathomable
distances, and I wonder who has walked there, has any person
set foot on the highest peaks, the deep hidden valleys. Are they
untouched? There is an atmosphere beyond the visible; my
challenge is to express the essence. Its not about being literal.
I have discovered in me a love for painting I didn’t know was
there. I love moving the paint around, scratching into it, finding
new textures. There is joy in colour even the most subtle of hues."

"I began my artistic path as a Textile Designer, qualifying from Pretoria
Technikon in 1983. Years later I had the opportunity to study further, and in
2000 I completed my BA in Technology: Textile Design, graduating cum
laude. For 13 (1984 -1997) years, I ran a home-based business, Colors Textiles,
where I hand-printed fabric lengths for dress designers—a period of
creativity and independence.
- In 1999, I accepted a position as designer at Mosaic Arts in Silvertondale,
Pretoria, where I remained for seven rewarding years.
- When the time came to move closer to my aging parents in the Eastern Cape,
a new chapter unfolded. I turned to painting—initially a personal
exploration, now a central thread in my life. Though I’ve had no formal
training in ne art, my practice has evolved through observation,
experimentation. I’ve worked in both oils and acrylics, but I love the viscosity
of oils. I prefer painting on board or paper—I don’t like the feeling of canvas.
The nature of my surfaces connects me more intimately to the textures I want
to achieve. "
