Born 17th July 1946 in Cheshire, England

Phil Hetherington was educated at Simon Langton Grammar School in Canterbury College of Art (during A-Levels).

At the end of 1964 he immigrated to Johannesburg, South Africa with his parents.

Disappointed at the wait of 10 months to enrol at the Johannesburg Collage of Art, Hetherington found a job at an advertising agency. A career in advertising followed, illuminated with numerous overseas awards for Art Direction. He continued this career path with his own consultancy in Cape Town.

Being involved in illustration and design all his life, turning to painting was a natural progression.  His first commission was for three large (100 x 250 cm) oils on canvas for the foyer of an international renovations company.

In 1992, Hetherington felt the need for tuition and joined Ryno Swart’s classes at the Artists’ Cooperative in Observatory. He was admitted as a member in 1993.

All paintings, including portraiture, were done from life (not photographs) as one’s eyes are infinitely more sensitive to colour and form than any camera and film.
